Not his alone

Harmony
Counterpoint
I have heard the explanations
Of Mozart’s genius

And yet there is magic
In the pianissimo
Of the violins
In the spaces
Between the notes
That is not his alone

Figaro
Bends his knee
Begs his lord and master
Let me marry Susanna

The chords grow quiet
The melody becomes simple
A glimpse of the eternal
In a moment
Both human and divine

Le nozze is skill
And cleverness
A composer at his peak
But here he channels
A greater force

A good pop song
Grants us joy
A folk song can be
Poetry and beauty
But only a symphony
An overture
An aria or sonata
Can touch your soul with
The sublime
