Talking is too difficult
The meanings of words too intense
I can hold witty conversation
With strangers, acquaintances
But with family I am lost
Unsure which words to choose.

So I use too many
I spill the words forth
Like volcanic lava
My Vesuvian opinions
Until the flow stops, hits a sea
Of indifference, incomprehension.

Or I use too few
One-word answers
No eye contact
Thinking all the while
Can’t we save our words
For those important things
We never talk about?

I have a million questions
I don’t know how to ask
Perhaps there are no answers
I will be left holding my thesaurus
Trying to find a shorter word for
