Captain America vs. William Blake

To my dismay, the poetry shelves
Are diminished by one and the
Graphic novels expand. I tell this
To the clerk, who resists the urge
To roll his eyes, but I can see myself
Reflected in his speedy checkout –
I am crazy person, complainer,
Maybe a poet.

I want to tell him: I do not hate
Comics. I know the anime blues
Of Cowboy Bebop, dark and lyrical
As any poem. But Inuyasha and the
Green Lantern need no bookshop’s
Help to find their readers. Poetry,
However, may need a push to survive
Among all those superpowered heroes –
Once residing safely across the aisle,
Now slowly encroaching into the
World of verse.
