Awake

The curve of your face – your soft
Smile across the pillow – touches
A dormant nerve in my brain.
An uncontrollable emotion slides down
My throat, twines through my intestines,
And collects in the tips of my toes.
I feel its echo in a different organ,
A muscle I had thought to safeguard
Against hope and love and pain,
But when I reach over to stroke
Your cheek and run my hand
Through your chest hair,
I see the truth:
I am without armor,
Naked and trusting.
